Create a separate network segment exclusively for smart home devices.

If a smart device is compromised, an attacker on that device can scan and potentially access other devices on the same network — including laptops and phones containing sensitive data. Isolating IoT devices onto a guest network or a dedicated VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) contains any breach to that segment. Most modern routers support a guest network at no extra cost.

Example: Enable the guest network on your router, connect all smart bulbs, speakers, and thermostats to it, and keep your computers and phones on the main network. The two groups cannot communicate directly even if they share the same physical router.

Change default login credentials on every device and router immediately after setup.

Use a unique, strong password for every smart home app account.

Reusing passwords across accounts means a breach on one service can unlock all the others — a technique called credential stuffing. Two-factor authentication requires a second verification step — typically a code sent to your phone — in addition to a password. Audit connected devices on your network every few months and remove anything unused.

Old devices that no longer serve a purpose still consume network resources and — more importantly — may no longer receive security updates. Every device left active is a maintenance obligation. Removing dormant devices shrinks your exposure without sacrificing functionality.

Example: Log into your router's admin interface and view the list of connected devices. If you see an old smart plug you replaced or a camera you decommissioned, remove it from the network and factory-reset the hardware before disposal.
